Wordpress Custom Admin Branding

Customize the login screen, header and footer of the Wordpress Admin

Jan 08

What is it? (Updated 2/2/2009)

Inspired by the Custom Login Plugin by Ben Gillbanks The Custom Admin Branding Plugin allows you to not only re-brand the Wordpress login screen, but also the admin header and footer with your own custom images. The plugin has been updated for WP 2.7. Legacy versions can be downloaded as well.

It should be fairly easy to use for anyone familiar with Wordpress and has basic css and html skills. At its simplest it only requires you to activate and then replace three images with your own. Photoshop templates are included to help you with that.

Installation

  1. Download the Custom Branding Plugin
  2. Upload the ‘custom_branding’ folder to your plugins folder
  3. Go to the plugin section in your admin and activate

Customization

Using the Photoshop templates, replace the custom images in the images folder with your own.
If you are familiar and competent (or just adventurous) with css you can customize the values in the included css files. Some of things you may wish to change are:

  • The bg color, border, and text color of the button in the login screen
  • The bg color and text color of the admin header (note that there are different values for regular text and links)

If you are using Wordpress 2.5 the plugin includes a custom admin color scheme. You can modify the values in the css file “custom-wp-admin.css” for a unique look. This is activated in your individual user profile.

The image in the footer can be linked as well. I use that area to put my logo for sites I’ve created for clients. If you are using version 1.1 or later of the plugin go to the options page under the settings menu. Type in the url you would like to link to, click “update” and you are good to go.

If you are using the legacy version for Wordpress 2.3 and below, to change the link you’ll need to open up custom_branding.php and change the value on or around line 43 to point to whatever url you want. You’ll also want to change the ‘alt’ value in case the image can’t be loaded.

Code Example

For all versions: If you wish to use other types of images (.jpg, .gif, etc…) you can, but you need to manually change the names in the custom_branding.php file also.

Drop Down Menu Integration for WP 2.5 - 2.6.3

One of my favorite Admin plugins is the drop down menu plugin from Ozh at Planet Wordpress. The legacy versions of the custom branding plugin will work the legacy versions of drop down menus.

I’ll post an update for the drop down menu compatible version when Ozh brings it out.

WordPress Upgrades

WordPress 2.5 brought about some major changes to the structure and markup of the administration system (hence the two versions of this plugin). But as long as the markup in the core files does not change the plugin will continue to work as you upgrade WordPress. This plugin does not modify any core files.

    Hi there - This is a great plugin, thanks. The only - and significant - problem though is that, when activated, the plugin is preventing certain dashboard and posting functionality from showing up.

    For example, I activated it on two sites running WP 2.2x, after which I could no longer see the “View site” link on the top left of the dashboard and, more importantly, I could see any of the WYSIWIG icons or code shortcuts in the write post interface.

    Any idea how these could be fixed please, as otherwise this is a cool and really useful plugin. Cheers, Richard.

  2. 2

    Sorry, I meant to say I could “not” see any of the WYSIWIG icons or code shortcuts in the write post interface… . Thanks.

  3. 3

    Hi Richard,

    Thanks for pointing out that error. Unfortunetely I don’t have a solution yet. I did notice that if you deactivate the plugin, bring up the write page and then re-activate the plugin it works - but only for that session.

    It seems like the css for the WYSIWIG is getting confused a little bit. I will continue to look into this and post a solution when I find one.

    If anyone else has an idea I would welcome any feedback.

  4. 4

    I tried out your branding plugin and it works for me sort of. however, when i click log out i get some errors.

    I suppose there might be a conflict with another plugin. I can send you a list or screen shot of the plugins i am using.

    I also tried to use your contact form and you are having issues with the verify image.

    Shoot me an email

  5. 5

    Hi

    I tried your plugin but receive the same errors on logging out

    Great idea though!

  6. 6

    I would like to see a continuation of the topic

  7. 7

    Love your plug-in. Thanks so much. Was working on this and just decided to do a quick google and found you.

    THanks. This is exactly what I need for clients. I use WP for a basic Content Management system - it is so much easier for a client to learn than larger CMS.

    This is great.

    Thanks again.!

  8. 8

    Hopefully the update should eliminate the errors some of you have been getting. There was some whitespace at the end of the code which was causing some havoc with the headers.

    Let me know if there are additional issues.

  9. 9

    Thanks so much for the plugin. I’ve always wanted to develop one for this purpose but fortunately, I have found it already done.

    Thanks for the update as it was causing an error which I wanted to point out but now it is fine.

  10. 10

    Hello,

    thank you for this great plugin, but I have this problem:

    Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /mounted-storage/home50b/sub009/sc34411-EILL/
    czechbracelet.info/wp-content/plugins/custom_branding/custom_branding.php:56) in /mounted-storage/home50b/sub009/sc34411-EILL/czechbracelet.info/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 391

    Can you help me?

    Thank you for reply.

    Kind regards,
    Edie

  11. 11

    I responded to an email to Edie but the most recent release of the plugin should clear up the remaining header issues.

    It should be noted that the plugin is compatible with Wordpress 2.2 and up.

    Please let me know if you have any other bugs or general comments.

  12. 12

    Very cool plugin. Adds a really nice polish to a site before handing it over to a client. :)

    I’m also excited that this will work with the Drop-Down Menus plugin, though I do hope you (perhaps working with that plugin’s author) do find a way to make them work without modifications. What happens the next time he puts out an update? It’ll be re-screwed up every time an update comes out unless you two build support in.

    Still, Nice effort. :)

    (I normally rankle at the necessity of modifying plugin files directly when there could be a Settings page, but in this case I think it works. It makes it a little less easy to mess up the “application design” that you the installer create. I… think… I like this better.)

  13. 13

    Hey Stephen,

    Thanks for the comment.

    I agree that it would nice if the integration would be seamless. The reason you have to modify the Ozh’s code is because my stylesheet is called before his. If anybody has any ideas along this route - I’m totally open for suggestions.

    I would actually really like to build in a settings page and if I can find the time in the future there will be. The problem with saving settings is that you then have to build in integration with the database - which is a whole new ballgame.

  14. 14

    “The problem with saving settings is that you then have to build in integration with the database - which is a whole new ballgame.”

    It’s actually really easy. I’m a hack and I’ve made a few plugins with Settings Screens. You don’t have to work the SQL directly at all — WP has functions that do it.

    I even managed to put all of a plugin’s options into an array so it’s one entry in the DB — prevents clutter in users’ tables! :)

    Look for:

    get_option()
    add_option()
    update_option()

    As for calling your CSS before Ozh’s, I think you can set a priority when adding the header hook. Set it really high and it should run later.

  15. 15

    Sounds good. I’ll give it a try.

  16. 16

    Change line 31 of your plugin to this:

    add_action('admin_head', 'custom_header', 11);

    Now it is compatible with Drop-Down Menus. :)

    Oh yeah, and the Plugin URL is incorrect.

    Let me know if you want help with the Settings page.

  17. 17

    Worked like a charm! I’ll update the plugin. Thanks Stephen!

  18. 18

    It now has a settings page for the footer link!

    Thanks for the inspiration Stephen.

  19. 19

    Im very excited about this plugin, and am just trying it out on my test site. i ran into one problem. i set my header area to white, and cant seem to get the link colors in the upper right to change;
    http://skitch.com/bewmedia/etrf/custom-branding-problem

    i changed the setting in the css to this
    #wphead_custom a {
    color: #000000;
    border:none;
    }

    but its not working for me.
    maybe im just way over tired, and missing something obvious.

    any advice?

  20. 20

    oh, also this class doesnt seem to be working completely either, background took but font color didnt

    #wphead_custom {
    background: white;
    padding: .8em 19em .8em 2em;
    color: #dd0460;
    }

  21. 21

    Hey Brooke,

    You need to add a couple additional classes to the style sheet (custom_branding_css). For individuals reading this later, these last couple of comments are referring to the legacy version of the plugin for WP 2.3.3 and down.

    #wphead_custom a, #wphead_custom a:visited {
    color: #000;
    border:none;}

    #user_info, #user_info a{
    color:#000;
    border-bottom:none;}

    When I get a chance I’ll update the plugin to include these classes by default.

  22. 22

    Hi,

    Great plugin. No errors at all.
    My only question is, how do I change the backgroundcolor of the login-button. It remains blue, whatever I do…

    Thanks, Janet

  23. 23

    Hi Janet,

    Thanks for the comment.

    What version of the plugin are you using?

  24. 24

    @Janet

    The login button’s values are coming from the ‘colors-fresh.css’ file in the css folder which is in the wp-admin folder.

    I will update the plugin to include these classes on the custom_branding stylesheet.

  25. 25

    Thanks for your good advice Josh!

    Now that my login screen is (almost) perfect, I see that the border of the “remember me” radiobutton is still blue.
    I’m sure you know how to fix that too…
    Cannot find it in the ‘colors-fresh.css’ file you mentioned earlier.

    Janet

  26. 26

    @Janet
    Unfortunately styling radio buttons and checkboxes is somewhat quirky. I believe WordPress actually hasn’t applied any style to it. The blue border you are seeing is coming from your browser.

    The only good way I know to style checkboxes is with css and javascript together.

    Hi,
    I am a newbie that currently test locally WordPress. Why the plugin is not registered at the official site. I have luckily discover it after hazardous web surfing. It’s really convenient to users to search WordPress plugins and consult, rate, comment with only one profile. However, I do not know if it’s convenient too for developer…
    Regards.

  28. 28

    It is a actually registered at the official site but I’ve never been able to figure out how to use Subversion to actually get it on there.

    Unfortunately its a real hassle and for me there are too many hoops to jump through. Maybe in the future though…

  29. 29

    uh… it doesn’t work? I uploaded all the files to the folder, and activated the plug in… but my login screen still looks the same as before?

  30. 30

    I can try and help but you’ll need to provide a little more information - like what version of WP and the plugin you are using for starters.

  31. 31

    Janet(April 8, 2008):
    Try this in the plugin’s css:

    #rememberme {
    background-color: transparent;
    border: transparent;
    }

    rememberme is the id of the checkbox in the login form. This worked for me in IE6/7 & FF2.

    k.

  32. 32

    Hi Kerry,

    Sorry for my delayed reaction, but your solution solved the problem.
    Thanks a lot!!!

    Janet

  33. 33

    Thank you for sharing the plugin. Great stuff!

  34. 34

    Love the plugin, I blogged about it. There was one issue though, when using a custom administrator interface, the header and footer parts of the plugin would interfere with the interface. So I modified (more or less removed) part of the code so the plugin would only customize the login screen.

    The details are here: http://blog.dimonay.com/500/wordpress-custom-admin-branding-login-only/

  35. 35

    Hey Dennis,

    Thanks for the kind review.

    Yeah, the header and footer customization is an issue when used with other custom admin plugins since they are using the same hooks.

    You can potentially use both if you just modify the css and image file to fit the dimensions that the other plugin’s header is using.

    For the next release I will think about putting in support for the some of the more common admin themes out there like the Leopard theme, and Fluency.

  36. 36

    It appears the new Ozh Admin Drop Down menu (released today?) breaks when used with your plugin. I get the menu appearing below the header image, thus overlapping the page title.

    Anyone else get this?

  37. 37

    I’ll take a look and get it fixed as soon as I can.

  38. 38

    Hi Paul,

    I have updated the Custom Branding Plugin. Download the new version and it should work fine with the drop down menu plugin.

    Let me know if there are any issues.

  39. 39

    Great plugin guys! - I am using it and have even written a short review of it on my site http://www.mikedeanellis.com.

    Keep up the good work!

  40. 40

    Hey Mike,

    Thanks for the kind review. Glad it has been useful for you.

  41. 41

    Hi Josh,
    very nice plugin, congratulation.
    I’ve a question.
    How can I change the link of the custom_header.png to view the site home page?
    I installed the plugin and than I had to change the website directory, so the preview link is incorrect.

    Thank so much

  42. 42

    Sorry I forgot this:

    WordPress versione 2.6.2.
    Custom Admin Branding 1.1.1

    thx

  43. 43

    @Maceo

    Looks like you answered your own question, but the url of the header image is dynamic and is set to be whatever your WordPress site url is.

    When you go to your general settings in the WP admin you can set the WordPress address and the blog address. Whatever is in the WordPress address section will be what the header image is pointing to.

    If you wanted to change this to be something different you need to go into the custom_branding.php file and change the code around line 92.

    Just replace (including the single quotes):

    ‘ . get_settings(’siteurl’) . ‘

    with the full url of wherever you want the image to link to.

  44. 44

    So fast!!!
    Now it works, thanks so much for your speed.
    Really kind.

    have a nice night

  45. 45

    hi!

    nice plugin! is there a easy way to change the bottom on the login screen? (login) its kinda poor, så it could be nice if there where some way to change it.

    Take care Mike

  46. 46

    Hey Mike,

    Are you talking about the “login” button?

    If so, there is a class for that in the custom_branding.css file included in the plugin.

    Look around line 11 and you will see values for the background-color, border, and color that you can change to match your graphics.

  47. 47

    Hi Josh

    excuse my spelling its horrible! like u said i where talking about the login buttom;-) thanks so much for the help, ill will style the butt right away:-) and thx for the awesome plugin!

  48. 48

    Haha, nice plugin! I will use.

  49. 49

    I’ve been getting a fatal error when I try to activate this while I’ve got the bibtex plugin active. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare mt_options_page() (previously declared in /u/ORCATECH/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/bibtex/bibtex.php:133) in /u/ORCATECH/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/custom_branding/custom_branding.php on line 19

  50. 50

    Hey Nicole,

    It looks like there is a conflict with some function names. Try opening up the custom_branding.php file and on line 15 replace

    mt_options_page

    with

    presspix_options_page

    Do the same for line 19.

    Hopefully that will clear the conflict.

  51. 51

    The link for the Wordpress 2.5 - 2.6.3 download doesn’t work? 404.

  52. 52

    Thanks for the heads up. The link should work now.

    53

    Hi Josh, great plugin!

    All works well, but just noticed that your 1.2 version says 1.1.1 on the plugins panel, you might want to update the version info.

  54. 54

    Hi

    Sounds like a great Plugin. I heard about you through yoast.com.

    I was wondering, if this plugin will also work with Wordpress MU? Would this allow me to rebrand the admin-backend to our own branding?

    Thanks for any feedback :-)

    Greets,
    patrick

  55. 55

    @Plugin Junkie - Thanks for the catch. I’ve updated the plugin so the proper version is now displayed.

    @Idealizer - I haven’t been able to check to make sure but I’m pretty sure its the same structure is the css so it should work.

    Once I verify it I’ll post an update to the plugin page.

  56. 56

    That is very useful plugin I should try one of those. thank you for sharing this one.

  57. 57

    hi josh,

    i am using WordPress 2.7 beta and installed your updated 1.2 version. (btw. thanx for your update) everything is fine except the linkback thing from my dashboard to the wordpress site (in the header) is not there. if i deactivate your plugin the text link to return to the site is there and available.

    question ;) : how can i fix this problem ? i only see a option to the admin_footer but not to the header in the costom_branding.php

    thanx for help and answer.

    best regards and a nice week from here …

    nilson

  58. 58

    Hey Nilson,

    Thanks for the heads up. I’ll take a look at the latest release of 2.7 and see if anything has changed regarding the link placement.

    There is no option currently for the header. It just follows the original WP link back to the home page of your blog/site. If you really want to change it - take a look in the custom_branding.php file and change the href (should be commented well enough to find).

  59. 59

    I want the header image to link back to the blog. With this plugin, there is no way to navigate back to the main site out of the admin. Is there some code that can be added to do this?

  60. 60

    any update regarding recent release wordpress 2.7?
    I did activate the plugins and found that custom header image does not show up on admin page.

  61. 61

    @joecool - I want this as well. The underlying code changed a little which prevented this from happening out of the gate but I am working on it and will post an update.

    @megasale - I’m not sure why this is happening for you. I have several WP installs running 2.7 with the plugin correctly. Have you upgraded to the most recent version of the plugin? It did changed significantly from the previous version to be compatible with WP 2.7. Also make sure that your image names are correct. They should be exactly the same as in the sample file and in the same directory. They cannot move.

  62. 62

    Hi Josh,
    I did clear my cookies and refresh the site few times and the prob is gone.
    Just that the image does not have the link to homepage (same issue with other member here).

  63. 63

    For those of you who check the comments first - the plugin has been updated and includes a link back to your main site as well as some clean up on the login page.

    The download link is at the top of the page.

  64. 64

    i’m very sad seeing that with the 1.3 version of plugin under wp 2.7 the logo has not displayed. no one of the 3 logos created by this plugin, in wp 2.7 with the 1.1.2 version all works well. it’s very strange…

  65. 65

    i’ve corrected it edited the name of directory to custom_branding instead of custom-admin-branding (the default), anyway i advise you to put this code for wphead_custom instead so you can translate in language you wphead bar:

    echo ‘
    <img id=”header-logo_custom” src=”‘ . get_settings(’siteurl’) . ‘/wp-content/plugins/custom-admin-branding/images/custom_header.png”

    ‘;
    $user_info = get_userdata(1);
    //print_r($user_info);
    printf(__(’Howdy, %2$s‘), ‘/wp-admin/profile.php’, $user_info->user_nicename);
    if ( ! $is_opera ) {
    echo ‘ | ‘;
    _e(’Turbo’);
    echo ‘
    ‘;
    }
    echo ‘|
    ‘;
    _e(’Log Out’);
    echo ‘

    ‘;
    favorite_actions();
    echo ”;

    See ya!

  66. 66

    Yeah, something went wanky when I uploaded the new version last night.

    I finally got svn working so I could put the plugin in the WordPress Extend directory but the correct files did not get placed and I have not been able to figure out how to update them.

    I replaced the download link to link to my site here and it should have the correct files.

    Sorry for the trouble.

  67. 67

    Josh,

    My client and I really like the plugin, but I think we’ve found a bug.

    In the admin header its expected to display “Howdy, [name of the person logged in]” etc. Instead it displays “Howdy, Brett” no matter who is logged in. It seems it set the user variable to my name at the time of installation and now it’s not looking to see who is logged in.

    I took a look at the code, but I’m not a PHP wiz yet.

    I did verify that if I deactivate the plugin the correct user name is displayed.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brett

  68. 68

    Josh,

    I’m using WP 2.7 and plugin version 1.3.3 The site I’m developing was set up Dec 17, 2008, so I’m not sure if I got the latest version you uploaded on the 23rd or not.

    Brett

  69. 69

    Hey Brett,

    I’ll take a look and see what I can find. Thanks for the comments.

  70. 70

    @Brett

    Until I get the plugin updated here is the fix you need.

    Around line 97 in custom_branding.php replace:

    $user_info = get_userdata(1);
    echo($user_info->first_name . “\n”);

    with:

    global $current_user;
    get_currentuserinfo(); echo($current_user->user_firstname . “\n”);

    And you should be good to go. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.

  71. 71

    Josh,

    Thanks for the very quick reply and solution. I confirmed that the fix does work!

    Brett

  72. 72

    Hi. I like your plugin, but would like to know how one could extend the graphic on the registration page? The math question is extending beyond the graphic in WP 2.7.

    Thanks.

    Jonathan

  73. 73

    Hey Jonathan,

    There are a couple options: You could crop the psd source file to be longer. You could also adjust the background css of the login screen to match up with a background color you need.

    if you can point me to your login screen you are talking about I can give you a more specific fix.

  74. 74

    Josh:

    Thanks for the advice. It worked!

  75. 75

    Weeks and weeks trying to find a plugin like this one, you’ve really help me about this one! Many thanks for the info and post! I’ve just download it and I’m going to use write now on my website!

    Cheers!

  76. 76

    I cant wait to try this out.. Can we use this plug in to customize the registration page as well? If not, does anyone know a good plugin for this task in 2.7?

  77. 77

    @daddy design - yes the plugin customizes the registration page (it is the same as the login page)

  78. 78

    I don’t like that $current_user->user_firstname is not a mandatory field so I changed it so if firstname isn’t set it will display the user name. I think this is a very good change and submit it to you for your consideration.

    global $current_user;
    if (isset($current_user->user_firstname)){
    get_currentuserinfo(); echo($current_user->user_firstname);
    } else {

    @Ryan

    Awesome. I will include it in the next version. Thanks for the contribution.

  80. 80

    is there a way to change the gray strip on top of the login page? And is there a way to change the background color on all the pages?

  81. 81

    Thanks for the contrib Josh. I also had the issue with WP 2.7 and the ‘Howdy,…’ username.

    I tried the code you gave Brett but I was getting an error and the plugin was disabled.

    I found that the code from Ryan worked for me at least until you get a chance to update the plugin

    Once again, thanks.

  82. 82

    @daddy design

    If you open ‘custom_branding.css’ and find #wphead_custom that change the background property to change the header and for the actual background you can put the following code in that file.

    /*Main background color hack*/
    body {
    background:#ccffff;!important}

  83. 83

    @Daddy design again ok so the changing the body background hack didn’t do the whole background. I have fixed it heres the new one.

    ADD
    /*Main background color hack*/
    #wpwrap {
    background:#ccffff;!important}]

    CHANGE
    #footer_custom {
    clear: both;
    text-align: center;
    width: 500px;
    margin: auto;
    height: 100px;}

    #footer_custom .docs {
    padding-top: 0px;
    line-height: 100%;}

    TO
    #footer_custom {
    clear: both;
    text-align: center;
    width: 100%;
    margin: auto;
    height: 100px;
    background:#ccffff;}

    #footer_custom .docs {
    margin:0px;
    padding-top: 0px;
    line-height: 100%;}

    I made the background a bright blue just for testing you can easily change just where the colors are referenced.

    Hi Josh,

    I installed the plugin. However on the settings page the only thing that shows up is a field to set the “footer link”… No other ‘options’ or fields whatsoever…

    I’m using version 1.3.4 of the plugin and WP2.7

    Thanks in advance for your reply!

    CID

  85. 85

    @CID That is the only option currently available right now. In the future I would like to allow for uploading of the images from the options and some other things.

  86. 86

    @CID

    Also any editing need can be done via the edit plugin page.

  87. 87

    @Josh (+Ryan): sorry folks, I should’ve spent a couple of minutes reading the documentation before posting that question. It was a ’spontaneous install’ at the end of a long day. The principle now is clear.
    Nevertheless: thanks for your quick reponse(s) and thanks for sharing the plugin!

    Grtz, CID

    This is a great plugin. I want to say thanks for making it. I don’t think enough people are aware of it, or most everyone would be using it.

    I am getting an error where the words don’t show up on internet explore for the register screen. It works on the login.php screen, but on the register screen it show the new logo, but no words. Eg. User name password.

    I am wondering if this is something you have come across?

    Thanks.

  89. 89

    @Ted

    I have not heard about this issue. What version on IE are you using? Can you share the url you are seeing it on? If you don’t want to put it in the comments, contact me through this sites contact form.

  90. 90

    Hi Josh, great plugin. Silly question: in the post you refer to v1.3.4 but on WP it shows v1.3.3 - while you apparently released it on the 17th this month, which is strange… You sure you’ve released it on WP?

    Reason I’m asking is that with v1.3.3 I’m getting some strange interaction issues with a theme I’m using (i.e. Mysty Morningfrom Nate @ Refueled) so I’m kinda hoping that 1.3.4 licks it, as I’d very much like to use your plugin! (BTW: I’m not asking for help in hunting down that bug - goodness knows what CSS yuyu is going on between the two; I’m just hoping that the new version resolves it…) Thanks again!

  91. 91

    @Alvaro

    Yeah, I’m not sure what the issue is with the WordPress repository. I updated the plugin a couple weeks ago and while it updated the file you can download it never actually updated the version number being displayed.

    If you go the plugin page on the WordPress site and hover over the download link you’ll see that it is actually for 1.3.4. I haven’t had time to pursue it with the WordPress team however.

    Most themes don’t affect any admin stuff so unless Misty Morning is different in this regard I would doubt its the theme. It could be a conflict with another plugin. Do any other plugins you have modify the login, header or footer areas? I would start by looking there.

  92. 92

    This is a great plugin - well documented and easily modified. Thank you!

    I downloaded it from the WordPress repository yesterday and I’m having the problem with it showing the wrong name. So, I checked the version. Even though the .zip was named 1.3.4, the comments in the php file say 1.3.3.

  93. 93

    Should have also said that I’m using the username fix you posted above. I just wanted to let you know about the version issue. :)

  94. 94

    Thanks for the info. I will check it out.

  95. 95

    I’m having some weirdness with the plugin since the upgrade. Unfortunately, the automatic upgrade through the plugins control panel in 2.7 wiped out all my customizations (which I thought I’d read that upgrades wouldn’t affect anything).

    In trying to fix it, it’s duplicating the wp-head stuff including the “howdy…” and the dropdown tabs. It’s basically showing me two stacked on top of each other.

    The source says that it’s putting the duplicate inside the head tags, then putting them where they normally go after the body tag.

    I downloaded the most current version from Wordpress (that says 1.3.3, by the way) moments ago. Is there a newer version that addresses this issue?

    Thanks!
    Joelle

  96. 96

    When the plugin is activated for first time users I wanted the sample images to show up so they know its working and so they can get a feel for what the plugin does. There is probably a way where the script could check to see if images are already in place and therefore wouldn’t overwrite them but that is way over my head. If someone wanted to add that in that would be awesome.

    There was a versioning issue last upgrade I’m still trying to work out with the WP people. The link for the 1.3.4 download is correct and is the latest even though the version says 1.3.3. I’m going to try and release 1.3.5 in the next couple of days to clear up confusion.

    What version did you upgrade from? Are you using any other plugins that modify the header area?

  97. 97

    Hi Josh, I want to suggest some things about this amazing plugin.

    1. What about uploading header, footer, and login images to different path from plugins folder? that’s because when we update the plugin we must upload and replace the images again.

    2. Could you make a css editor for these items? I mean for login screen, header and footer.

    Thanks in advance Josh!

  98. 98

    @alectro Great ideas. I will definetely look into the updating issue. It’s annoying for me as well.

    Can you explain a little more about the css editor? Are you wanting to have fields on the options page to put in specific values for the css?

  99. 99

    Hi Josh, yes I can imagine that would be a lot of work.

    About CSS Editor I mean a place to edit the values for the admin/login/logout/forgot-pass page, just like when we edit themes on WP, as a text area to put custom values.

    Regards!

  100. 100

    I’m believe I’m having the same problem as Joelle above… in Internet Explorer AND using the Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu I’m getting the duplicate information at the top of the screen. It looks like this:

    Username | Turbo | Log Out Howdy, Username | Turbo | Log Out

    In Firefox it looks perfectly fine, and if I deactive either plugin, the drop down or the custom admin, it works fine in IE…

    When I first login using internet explorer it looks correct, then immediately refreshes and adds the duplicate information…

    Overall a fantastic plugin.

  101. 101

    Hi and thanks for this great plugin!

    I can’t seem to find where to change the active/hover link color for the login screen page (Register | Lost Your Password).

    Also, where’s the text color CSS for the labels over the text input window? (User Name & Password)

    Lastly, is there any way to change the WP default gray bar at the top of the sign-in page?

  102. 102

    Thanks for the great Plugin Josh!!

    I’d love to see the features that alectro requested!

    I’d suggest a field in the settings screen which allows the admin to set custom path to the images..

    And would love to be able to set the bg colour of the header in particular..

    i’ll try pasting code my idea in the next post..

  103. 103

    and extra field liek so:
    BG Colour (default #464646): #

    and a style line for the head:

    function custom_header() {

    $default = ‘464646′;

    if($background_colour = get_option(’admin_branding_col’))
    {;}
    else
    $background_colour = $default;

    echo ”;
    echo ‘#wphead_custom {background: #’ . $background_colour . ‘;height:100px;}’;

  104. 104

    err.. sorry, html like got wiped, but you get the idea..

    thanks again! Tim

  105. 105

    Hey Tim,

    I will try and incorporate it in the next version - attach it to an email and send it to me.

    stuff at byershome dot com

  106. 106

    kudos on the plugin, I am a newbie to wp and found this fairly simple to install and customize. Like Devon though I’m still trying to figure out the CSS for the text and input fields
    wp 2.7.1 ver 1.3.5

    thanks

  107. 107

    I just updated your plugin and it wiped out the settings I already had in place. It would be nice to update and not have all the images set to the PressingPixels images.

  108. 108

    I am having the same issue as Jane. Everything is good in Mozilla, however in IE the user info shows up twice.

    Is there an easy fix for this?

    Thanks for a great plugin. This along with the ozh plugin makes for a much better wordpress admin.

  110. 110

    Ok, I am having MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR problems since updating the plugin. Not only did it wipe out my customizations on the login and dashboard, it wiped out my whole control panel. When I sign in, all I get is a header/banner for “pressing pixels - a wordpress magazine”, along with the following, across the top of the banner:

    Howdy, admin
    Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wp_logout_url()in /homepages/11/d243789810/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/custom-admin-branding/custom_branding.php
    on line 103

    This is ALL I get. Nothing else! I couldn’t reverse this process or deactivate this plugin if I tried!!! I can’t do anything. I can’t even log out!!!

    What the heck?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!????????????

  111. 111

    I am having a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR problem!! I did an automatic upgrade of the custom admin branding, since it said there was an updated version available. When I did, not only did it wipe out my custom branding, it completely wiped out my whole dashboard, admin, and control panel. All I saw was a header/banner for “pressing pixels - a wordpress magazine”, along with the following, across the top of the banner:

    Howdy admin,
    Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wp_logout_url() in
    /homepages/11/d243789810/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/custom-admin-branding/custom_branding.php
    on line 103 I also saw this: (go to the following url:
    http://www.fdfwc.org/wp-login.php).

    All that is there is the banner, with the error, and NOTHING ELSE! I couldn’t undo anything or deactivate the plugin if I tried! Please help me! Please tell me there is a fix for this!!!

    I’d like to be able to say how great of a plugin this is for everybody else, but so far it’s been one big nightmare, just because I pushed one button…..

  112. 112

    @Monica,

    I am sorry for your trouble. What version of WordPress are you using? If you have FTP access you can just delete the plugin folder and that will effectively uninstall the plugin.

    The image removing is a known issue and I’m working on that for the next release. For now all you have to do is save your original images and just put those back in place of the default ones.

    Also, try clearing your browsers cache and doing a hard refresh on your browser window. Sometimes the browser still tries to pull in old info after updating plugins.

  113. 113

    Where are the photoshop files for this? I installed the plug in and don’t see them in the folder on the server. thanks!
    Alexa

  114. 114

    Hi there Josh,

    Any chance the header code fragment could be restructured in a way that would enable wordpress text (”Howdy…”) floating over the image if one longer that anticipated is used? I’d like putting up a screen wide header pic mirroring the one from the main page.

    Great plugin anyway!

  115. 115

    @alexa - sorry for the late reply. If you download the plugin there should be a folder called “source files” if not shoot me an email and I’ll send them to you.

    @xerxes - possibly. If you dig into the plugin and take the header image out of the code and instead replace it as a background to header div then all the text could float over it.

    I had originally set the plugin up to do just that but then it made it harder to put in the link.

    I’ll look into that for the next version though and see what options we might be able to configure.

  116. 116

    Thanks a lot Josh, that would be awesome! I’ll try your suggestion in the mean time.

    Of course, choosing the images to be displayed through the options page would also improve ease of use for those not accustomed with modifying the code manually. At the same time this could employ checks for proper picture sizes. Just a thought since I’m no expert.

    Cheers!
